Pages Needed for 2012 Legislative Session

Each year, I host ten school-age children from House District 80, ages 12 and older, to serve as pages for a day during the legislative session. Pages get to see the legislative process first-hand, receive an excused absence from school, have their photograph taken with their legislator and the Speaker of the House, and are provided lunch.

If your child would like to serve as a legislative page, please e-mail me at repjacobs@comcast.net and include in your message your street address and a telephone number where you can be reached. The ten spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are only available to residents of House District 80.

With the 2010 session of the General Assembly scheduled to conclude in less than a month, I still have six (6) unclaimed slots for middle and high school students from House District 80 to serve as pages for a day. Welcome Samantha Harper Jacobs

Three weeks ago, Evan and I welcomed our beautiful daughter, Samantha Harper Jacobs, into the world. She was born February 13th at Northside Hospital and was 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your vote of confidence in this year’s election. Together, we achieved a great margin of victory: 66.1% of the vote! For the next two years, I pledge to deliver the high levels of communication, responsiveness, and service as your State Representative that you have come to expect from me.

I’d like to invite you to a THANK YOU victory celebration this coming Tuesday, November 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Pub 71 in Brookhaven, which is located at 4058 Peachtree Road. My campaign will provide food and a cash bar will be available.

In other election news, the five-year renewal of DeKalb County Property Tax Assessment Freeze passed with an overwhelming countywide margin of 77.5% to 22.5%. Please click here for my recent article about the assessment freeze. Hopefully, when this measure comes up for another renewal by 2016, we can make it permanent.

If you live in the Murphey Candler, Silver Lake, Oglethorpe, and Historic Brookhaven neighborhoods, along with portions of Brookhaven Heights, Brookhaven Fields, and Ashford Park, your new State Senator will be Fran Millar. He won with 65.4% of the vote.

The following races are headed for post-Thanksgiving runoffs:

- Nancy Jester versus Jim Redovian for the District 1 seat on the DeKalb County Board of Education.

- Justice David Nahmias versus Tammy Lynn Adkins for the Georgia Supreme Court.

- Chris McFadden versus Toni Davis for the open seat on the Georgia Court of Appeals.

- Michael Rothenberg versus Courtney Johnson for the open seat on the Superior Court of DeKalb County.

The runoff election will be held on Tuesday, November 30.

I’ll send you more information and my recommendations regarding the judicial races as the runoff election draws closer. Choosing the most qualified people for these positions is very important. Once elected, judges have a lot of impact and tend to have some staying power.

Prior to the November 2 election, I will be participating in four “meet and greet” events, one in every corner of our State House District 80. These events will occur in Oglethorpe Estates (near Silver Lake), Nancy Creek Heights (near Murphey Candler Park), Brookhaven Heights, and Toco Hills. There will be at least one event near you. Please consider inviting your neighbors as well.

These meet and greets are a good opportunity to discuss the state and local issues that are important to you. The first event will be:

Rep. Jacobs to Serve on Transportation Roundtable

A couple of weeks ago, I posted this report (click to read) regarding transportation issues. Among the things I discussed is the referendum that will occur in 2012 for a one-cent transportation sales tax. You’ll get to vote on it and make the final decision.

Before you decide, there will be a list of transportation projects made public that will be funded if the transportation sales tax passes. The project list for the Metro Atlanta region will be selected by a roundtable of local government leaders from throughout the region. Each county gets two representatives: the elected head of the county government (for DeKalb County, it’s CEO Burrell Ellis) and a mayor selected from among the mayors of the cities located in the county.

The roundtable also includes two State Representatives and one State Senator selected from the region as a whole. I’m pleased to announce that I have been selected by the Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Jay Roberts, and by Speaker David Ralston, to serve as one of the two State Representatives from the Metro Atlanta region. The other State Representative who will serve on the roundtable is Sean Jerguson of Cherokee County.

This is great news for DeKalb County, which will have an additional representative on the roundtable, and great news for our community. I intend to communicate with you on a regular basis and solicit your input as the roundtable begins its meetings.

Atlanta Greek Festival

The Atlanta Greek Festival is this weekend at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2500 Clairmont Road. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Go there hungry. The food is great! Extra parking and a shuttle bus to the event are available at Century Center. Please visit atlantagreekfestival.org for more information.
